I've noticed a few trends in the Indian fashion industry that I absolutely love. These trends incorporate the glamour of old Hollywood with the chic and style of the retro decades. I'm a big fan!

Fishnet Gloves

I think teaming up a pair (or just a single) sexy fishnet or glamorous white/black silk gloves with a saree is the greatest thing since the saree blouse! It's stylish, it's glamorous, it's sensual and it's totally daring and new to the Desi fashion world. A trend worth trying if you want to stand out in even the most glamorous of crowds. If you want to make it even more stylish, add a bold ring over the glove.

Metallic Saree Blouse

Another trend I've rather taken to is teaming up a simple saree with a gold, silver or copper hued long sleeved blouse. The key is to tailor the blouse to fit like a second skin. The second thing to remember is to pick a dull metallic hue so it doesn't over power the whole look.

Sameera for Rivaaz

Sameera Reddy is the brand ambassador for Gitanjali's Rivaaz and she was at the Hilton Hotel in Mumbai to promote the brand. The highlight of the event was Sameera's simply gorgeous white and pale gold lace lengha.

The beautiful ensemble thoroughly stole the show.

Usually too much lace can give the appearance of being draped in a curtain or tablecloth, but this simple and classic number combines just the right textures and designs of laces that the look is quite stunning.

The detailing of the faded gold lace trim and the light stone and bead work add a touch of whimsy to the outfit.

The see-through lace is thin enough to be sexy and yet thick enough to be classy at the same time.

Vogue India - July Cover Disaster

This cover highlights everything that's wrong with Vogue India. I'm not just talking about the recycled designer clothing featured in the issues, but also the sheer mindlessness of the articles and the disastrous airbrushing. Well, these are things that are wrong with every issue of Vogue India, but the July issue is even more disastrous than any of the other issues.

The July issue features Asin, a Keralite now making the rounds in the South Indian cinema industry and doing exceptionally well for herself. The problem isn't really with Asin, but it's with the make up team at Vogue India. You'll know what I mean when you see the cover.

Here's exhibit A.

The red lipstick, the pale foundation, the vamp look...it all screams classic Hollywood. Yes, we can so obviously see that they were trying to recreate the classic golden age of film: the '50s, but with a modern twist. The problem is that it just doesn't work on Asin. The pale skin tone combined with the bluish tint in her overly sprayed hair just makes Asin look artificial, like a human robot. She doesn't look alive in this picture at all and that just looks wrong.

Admittedly I've never seen Asin without a thick layer of foundation on, but this is still over the top. Compare the Vogue India cover to another picture of Asin and you'll instantly see what I mean.

This isn't the best picture of Asin, but she's wearing make-up that looks neutral and it suits her much better. She looks alive. Although the Vogue cover is airbrushed, it wasn't done right. Proper airbrushing could have actually salvaged the picture. Another thing they could've done to take the edge off the horrible make up is to have photographed her under softer lighting. I guess these are just too much to expect from Vogue India and we're left with a Vogue India cover featuring a robot.

The Worst Make Up in Bollywood

I think the title says it all. In honour of the poll winner, here is a round up of the crème de la crème of Bollywood and South India's celebrities with the worst make up ever.

Amisha Patel

Amisha Patel usually doesn't get makeup wrong, but this is just horrible. The foundation looks like it's melting off of her face, her eyebrows are too light and her lips are too orange. Not a major makeup disaster, but it still looks exceptionally bad.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu is one of the most fashion conscious women in Bollywood so when I saw this picture of her I was shocked! That hairstyle makes her forehead look like a giant board. Besides that, the makeup is horrible. The foundation is so matte and so light that it looks like a mask. There's not enough colour in her cheeks or lips to balance out the foundation so it looks even worse.

In this case she's wearing washed out foundation with stand out orange blush! Ugh...it's just a basic thing to get wrong.

Celina Jaitley

Here's the worst of Celina Jaitley, the girl who wears too much make up.

If that's not a mask then I don't know what is. I can't even look at her face, it's scaring me. The foundation is too light and the blush is too thick and applied to the wrong part of her cheeks. Her face looks droopy and masklike and the darkness above her upper lip looks like a mustache.

Again, the make up looks artificial. It's more like stage make up than regular-wear make up and just way too light for her skin tone!

The make up is so caked on that it's melting under the bright lights.

Rani Mukherjee

This was a total surprise. The epitome of Desi style has messed up her make up in the worst possible way.

This is wrong on several different counts. Let's see...the foundation is too light and too matte and there's not enough colour on her face to make her look alive. It's pretty much the same problem as Celina Jaitley's...it looks like she's wearing a mask. I'm very disappointed, I expected much better from Rani Mukherjee.

Navaneeth Kaur

Here we move on from bad foundation to horrible lip liner.

You'll have to click on the image for the larger version to see the full impact of this. South Indian actress Navaneeth Kaur demonstrates how not to wear lip liner. Let's leave the dark lip liner in the 1990's, shall we? It's just really sad when a professional actress gets something as simple as lip liner completely wrong.

I saved the best (or worst) for last. You might want to brace yourselves first before scrolling down any further. Also, if there are any small children in the room, you might want to send them away unless you want them to wake up having nightmares about this.

Kiran Rathod

You have to see this to believe it.

This is actually one of the better pictures of Kiran Rathod you can find. Being too washed out isn't usually her problem when it comes to make up. Just look at the pictures below and you'll see what I mean.

I don't think I need to describe why this is wrong. The make up is just horrible!

All I can say is that Kiran Rathod shouldn't be allowed to wear make up. No, she shouldn't even be allowed to go near a tube of lipstick! If this was done by a make up artist, he or she should be removed from the cinema industry! I can't imagine that any self-respecting make up artist would ever do this though, so I'm just going to say that Kiran Rathod does her own make up. If you need to wear this much make up, you probably shouldn't be in front of a camera!

Raja Ravi Varma Sarees - Original vs. Recreation

Emerand Green Saree - Like it or Hate it?

I'll refrain from commenting on this for the time being. What do you guys think of this saree? Do you like it or hate it?

Update: Seems like this one is either loved or hated. I actually don't like it much. However, the colour is absolutely gorgeous and I applaud the thought behind the innovation. What I hate about this is the fact that it's wrinkled, that just looks really juvenile and unpolished. The second thing I don't like is the width of the pallu. It's such an awkward width: too long to be a butterfly pallu and too short to be a true pallu. I like the 'pintex' design, but the rest of the embroidery is overdone.

Trend Watch - Saree Brooches and Pins

Desi women have worn brooches and pins with sarees for a long time, but their use has always been limited to an ornamental role. A small pin above the left breast was pretty much the only way brooches and pins used to be worn. The '60s and '70s saw brooches worn at the waist to hold the pallu in place. Over the past couple of years, however, sarees and brooches have become almost inseparable. It has become extremely trendy to find different uses for brooches and pins. Brooches are no longer just ornaments to decorate the saree, but have become instrumental in pinning them in place, adding colour and even helping to achieve a slimmer look. Here are a few places to strategically pin a brooch and the types of brooches and pins that will suit each place.

Before you go on, however, there are Five Golden Rules you must know when it comes to wearing brooches.

Golden Rule No. 1: Never wear more than one brooch at a time.

Golden Rule No. 2: Always match the style of your brooch to the style of your saree.

Golden Rule No. 3: Never wear a brooch with a heavily worked saree.

Golden Rule No. 4: Golden Rule No. 3 doesn't apply if the brooch is being worn on the saree blouse.

Golden Rule No. 5: Never wear a gold brooch with a saree embroidered in silver or a silver brooch with a saree embroidered in gold.

Now that you know the Five Golden Rules, you're ready to continue.

At the Shoulder

This is the typical place that most people would choose to place a brooch at. However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't. I think this placement works best on simple/plain sarees as the brooch will add a bit of life to the saree and stand out on its own. Keeping this in mind, make sure any brooch you pin at the shoulder is a showstopper! You can also gather the pallu at the shoulder and add a brooch to hold it in place at the top of your shoulder.

Here are a few brooch designs that will work well at the shoulder. Remember, the key is to choose bold, striking pieces.

I love this brooch. It's so Indian and it is definitely something that would go under the category of 'showstopper'!

Some people would consider peacocks to be tacky, but I think, depending on the design, that peacock brooches can look really hot. Especially peacock feather brooches!

Bold, large, Art Deco style pieces also work well at the shoulder. This is a great brooch to pin the gathered pallu at the top of the shoulder. I wouldn't recommend this below the collar bone.

A classic floral filigree brooch never goes out of style!

At the Hip

Pinning a brooch at the hip to hold the pallu in place is such a great idea because my arm always gets tired of holding up the pallu. I don't know exactly why this technique went out of fashion after the '60s and '70s, but it's one look that I think should be brought back. Here are a few brooches that add flair and elegance to this practical and beautiful look.

One thing to remember is to choose a sturdy brooch that will hold the weight of the pallu in place without damaging your saree. You can, of course, always pin it in place with a bobby pin first and then add the brooch on top, but I think that's just excessive and puts too many holes in the saree. Here are a few brooch designs for this look.

Symmetrical shapes work best at the hip so I would recommend a rounded, bold, large floral brooch.

This is a great brooch and and I really like pearls. This brooch would look great with a dark red or black saree with gold and pearl embroidery or just a plain saree in those same colours. The idea is to make the brooch pop!

This is the kind of brooch that I wouldn't recommend for any place except at the hip.

Brooches with multicolour crystals are probably the most popular type around, but I think this is too flashy to be worn at the shoulder. Try it at the hip.

At the Back of the Shoulder

This is actually my favourite place to pin a brooch. You want to look good from the front and from behind and this is such a great way to do that. Make sure to keep the brooch small and delicate.

Here are some small and delicate brooch designs to inspire you.

This is a great brooch for a saree with antique silver work. I would suggest pinning this cameo brooch horizontally.

This is a perfect brooch design for the back...it's small, it's delicate and it's very pretty.

Here's another brooch taking its inspiration from nature. It's a little more bold than the typical brooch I would recommend for the back, but it's still small and pretty enough to work.

At the Navel

We all struggle to pin the pleats in place and once we've managed that we struggle to hide the pin from view, but this is extremely difficult if you're going to be pleating your pallu up as well or going to show off your navel in some other way. So here's a great way to hide the pin from view and look super hot at the same time.

A few different brooches will work well here. Long and delicate brooches (serpents or climbing vines) or square/triangle brooches would be the best for this placement. Here are some ideas.

Place these kinds of brooches vertically just like in the picture.

This will look super hot with a black saree. I wouldn't recommend trying this design out with any other colour, not even silver or white. If you find a pretty bow design brooch in plain silver or gold, then it would be even better as it would go with a saree in any colour.

I would suggest placing a brooch like this horizontally rather than vertically like this.

Again, this is a design that I think is only suitable for the pleats. It's gorgeous, but a little on the gaudy side to be placed anywhere else. Don't place triangular brooches in an inverted way. Also, plain triangular brooches would be preferable to something as over worked as this.

At the Back

If you're going to be wearing your saree in the Gujarati style, then place a brooch at the back to hold the pallu in place.

I would recommend the same type of brooches for this as for holding the pallu in place at the hip.

On the Saree Blouse

This is another one of my favourite places to place a brooch. If you have a blouse cut deep with a 'V' neck, whether at the front or the back, place a symmetrical brooch where the two sides join to give the impression that the blouse is held in place with a jeweled clasp.

Designs that work best for this placement are butterfly and dragonfly motifs.

This is such a gorgeously designed brooch, but I think butterflies are too cutesy to be worn anywhere other than at the back of your saree blouse. It would add that extra flair and style to your look without making you seem too cutesy or 'Hello Kittyish'.

Dragonflies are also a great motif to give the semblance of a clasp as they're symmetrical and have triangular wings. They're also not seemingly cutesy as butterfly motifs are.

Long Hair Clips

If you want to show off your necklace and keep your pallu going across your chest smoothly, I would recommend using a long hair clip (crystal or pearl) to hold the pallu in place low on the shoulder. This is a very popular way of draping the pallu and many Bollywood starlets do it in the films and outside. It also looks much better when the pallu is unpleated. Hair clips are also more inexpensive than brooches so you also save money if you're on a budget.

One thing to keep in mind is to find hair clips that won't look too obviously like hair clips. Avoid hair clips with upturned ends.

Turn of the Century Sarees

It's not every day that I make historical posts, but here's one today.

The saree has been around for many millennia, but it's been quite hard to track the change it has gone through. It's believed that the saree has only undergone ornamental changes as its six yards (or nine) of fabric is so versatile and can be worn in many ways, instrumental changes were not necessary. After looking at these turn of the century pictures from India and Sri Lanka I think I have to agree. In the past 100 years, at least, changes to the saree have only been 'skin deep'. Even traditional hair ornaments, necklaces and anklets have not changed dramatically. It's only in recent years that the saree has gone through any kind of major makeover or face lift.

Attitude!

Whatever the century, this woman demonstrates that it's your attitude, carriage and confidence that will get you noticed more than anything else! She's rocking that saree and check out the 'odiyanam'!

Back in Fashion

That saree looks like it could be worn today and no one would even guess that it was a hundred years old. Was this hairstyle in fashion back then?

Ornamental Beauty

A silk saree worn with a long sleeved blouse. Traditional ornaments haven't changed much, in fact I think these ornaments look better than some we have now. Check out the anklet/toe ring combo, that's definitely one design I'd love to see reemerge!

Simple Saree

I think this is a good example of how enduring saree styles can be. This traditional style of saree draping has survived to this day.

Plantation Saree

This is the kind of regular-wear many women wore at the turn of the century. Here's a coffee picker going about her business clad in a blouseless saree.

Saree Shawl

This way of wearing a saree doesn't look very practical, but I'm not really sure what the context behind this pictures was so it's hard to say for certain.

That saree looks costly, especially compared to the ones in the other photos. She's also wearing the anklet/toe ring combo that I've started to really like.

I actually like this saree blouse design. It's conservative, but extremely well cut and neatly tailored. The high collar and 3/4 length sleeves both scream 'matron', but combined with a neatly draped saree and a bit of attitude it's possible to come out still looking hot! All this look needs is artsy glasses and you're ready to rock it.

This is the kind of saree blouse design you'd want to get done for everyday/regular wear. There's nothing special about it, but it's cut perfectly and you don't have to worry about anything being out of place or standing out too much.

Ladies in Red...No, Disasters in Red - Minissha Lamba and Hema Malini

I dunno what it is about the colour red that turns even the most fashionable ladies into walking, talking, glaring fashion victims. You all know the kind of red I'm talking about. It's been called 'lipstick' red, 'fire engine' red, 'blood' red, 'the '80s staple' red, 'tacky' red, and on and on and on. This year's Oscars saw a few dresses in this colour as well. The colour in itself isn't all that bad, but of course it doesn't look good on everyone and definitely doesn't look good in abundance. Here are two Bollywood divas who didn't get red right in many different ways.

Ready to Melt - Victim # 1

Here's Minissha Lamba at the premiere of her movie 'Shaurya' looking like someone just set her on fire.

And I don't mean that figuratively as in she's looking hot. No, I mean that literally. That red isn't doing anything for her. She looks like she can give flashing, glaring ambulance sirens a run for their money. I can almost picture her sitting on top of the ambulance, warding off people on the street with her blinding red glare. She looks ready to melt, I think it's already started to happen in the region of her armpit.

The blouse is loud, but otherwise unremarkable in design and the saree's nice matte brown finish is ruined by the excessive, tacky red embroidery. A softer red would have been better or perhaps less embroidery. But no, we're left to shade our eyes instead. That saree would glare a mile away even if she wasn't under the spotlight.

Hema Malini - Victim #2

This was really unexpected. It's not every day that a style icon like Hema Malini is caught committing a fashion crime. Here she is at Lalitya's album launch looking dour and starting to show her age. However, that's not a fashion crime, the fashion crime is that purse.

The saree and blouse are both quite unremarkable. In fact, I think they're both really boring and Hema Malini herself seems to have known this. Maybe that's why she felt it necessary to carry such an overworked, bargain binned at Chinatown type of bag. That bag doesn't go with that saree at all. It's a different red, with a different shade of gold embroidered on to it. It clashes horribly with both the saree and the blouse. The jewelled straps don't even go with the rest of the purse.

Perhaps if the body of the purse was plain gold or red then the jeweled straps would have been fine, but this just looks like the purse threw up it's contents. That purse as a whole would not match most outfits, unless it was just a plain white or black saree. With Hema Malini's saree, it looks extremely out of place and she looks like she's about to wither. Tacky, tacky, tacky!

A Peacock at the Swarovski Runway Rocks Show

The Swarovski Runway Rocks show took place at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai last night and it proved to be a star studded affair. All that aside, take a look at this peacock dress featured in the show.

I'm not going to say anything about this right now, but what do you guys think? Do you like it or hate it?

Update: Looks like you guys all hate it. I must say, I agree! The dress is too overwhelming on the body and really does nothing for the figure. Perhaps this was meant as a costume, but I can't see any showgirl dancing in this. Maybe it's a Halloween costume? Yes, the embroidery and the colours are stunning, but those things alone mean nothing if the structure and style are not there.

I'm going to paraphrase Karl Lagerfeld, "It doesn't matter if a hundred hours went into making a dress, it it's ugly, it's ugly."

If anyone know the exact quote let me know.

Shaina NC Fashion Show for CPAA - Gorgeous Designs!

The star studded affair took place a couple of weeks back and most of the designs were stellar! It was also for a good cause as the proceeds from the show went to CPAA (Cancer Patients Aid Association) so it was doubly good. The designs are innovative, fun and beautiful. There are a couple of designs that are extremely tacky, but most were extremely pretty so it made up for it.

The mix of textures, designs, hues and zaris was just right. They worked well together without looking gaudy or overwhelming...which is quite rare. The word that came to mind when I saw these pieces was 'spicy'! And, they certainly are very spicy!

Here are a few highlights.

I love the colour, very rich and vibrant. The different textures add more character and distinction to this saree.

Sakshi Tanwar makes this saree look good. There's nothing really special about it except the blouse, which is really nicely done.

Another very dramatic look. Although the colour combination of red and black is over played these days, this design puts new life into it.

The design of the saree is unremarkable except for how it's draped. I love this design, it shows off a bit of leg without over doing it. Very sexy and very innovative!

The colours are a little too bright when combined, but the look is pretty nice. The only bad thing about these two piece sarees is the extra tucking. The more fabric you have to tuck in, the bigger your stomach looks. You also run the risk of stuffing too much fabric, which can look bumpy and sloppy.

I love the colours and the design.

This is quite a beautiful creation. If you wanna go for the 'maharani' look, then this saree is definitely for you. The style and design take me back to a time of empresses and queens and dashing princes and trade on the silk road. It's got an air of imperial beauty and opulence to it that will suit any Bollywood premiere or your cousin's lavish wedding.

The Good, the Bad and the Fugly at the Hope and Little Sugar Premiere

The Hope and Little Sugar premiere took place on April 18th and it was a complete fashion disaster. Deceptively so. That's pretty much the gist of it. Have a look for yourself.

The Good

When I first saw this saree on Mahima Chaudhary, I totally loved it. The saree is gorgeous, the blouse is well designed and the colours are very pretty and feminine.

The pre-stitched elegance, the minimal accessories, the peek-a-boo golden shoes, I was all over it. The look is stunning and sexy and understated all at once. It has a look of luxury about it, yet at the same time it's not gaudy. Then came the abysmal let down.

The Bad

As I was admiring this saree and considering if I can purchase something similar, I came across this. The back.

This is so tacky that I can't believe Mahima Chaudhary actually posed for this picture. The pallu is utter crap. I think thin immitation dhupattaesque pieces are not all that bad when paired off with an Anarkali or some other kind of churidhar suit, but definitely does not work on a saree. The gorgeousity of the front is completely lost when one sets one's eyes upon this atrocity committed to the saree. The designer should be made to withdraw this design until it could be equipped with a proper pallu. Uggh!

The Fugly

If that wasn't bad enough, get a load of this!

This 'saree' (and I'm not very inclined to even call it that) looks like the bedroom curtains I used to have when I was a kid. The only difference is that my curtains were pink and this 'saree' is white. I don't know why I'm still calling it a saree. I'm just going to call it a curtain because that's what it is. It looks like she stole her grandmother's bedroom curtain and draped it as a parody of a saree. Actually, I think she stole her grandma's saree blouse too. As if the draped curtain wasn't bad enough, she just had to wear that saree blouse too. It's a movie premiere, at least make an effort to dress nicely. I hope she had the decency to give her grandma's curtain back and her saree blouse too!

Different Ways of Wearing/Wrapping a Saree

These innovative and traditional ways of wearing a saree should give you some fresh new ideas. Have a look and try them out. I wouldn't recommend all the styles for everyone, but see which ones can work for you. Also, pick a style depending on the texture of your saree, the style of your blouse and the occasion.

Here are some styles that shouldn't need a 'how-to' guide.

I would recommend a belt or belly chain or some kind of ornament for the waist so as to hold the pleats in place. Also, keep the pleats in the pallu quite small in order to give it a more feminine feel.

Check out the pleats!

Basic Gujarati style.

This style doesn't go well with the blouse. However, this style will go well with a spaghetti strap or strapless saree blouse. It might even work quite well with short sleeves, as long as the neck is cut wide and square.

I love the way the pallu is tucked underneath the strap of the blouse.

This style only works because there's a belly chain to hold everything in place. You can try pinning, but the effect is much nicer with a bejeweled waist.

Another style that employs an ornament (in this case a broach at the hip) to hold the pallu in place.

The side pleats really give this look a unique and trendy feel.

Creative use of a floral pin really makes this easy to create look stand out.

Nice way to show off the saree blouse.

It's simple, yet very effective.

I don't think this style of wearing a saree will really work without a belt/belly chain.

This style doesn't really suit the saree, but would look really nice with a two-tone chiffon or georgette saree.

I love this look. It's sleek, it's simple and very, very sexy!

A combination of a couple of different styles.

Very similar to another one above, but with the pallu inverted and tucked in at the waist.

Try these out, create your own style of wrapping or just perfect the style you prefer. Just remember to wear your saree neatly, custom tailor/alter your blouse and be confident in what you're wearing.

Mallika Sherawat's Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam Number

This is such a beautiful reinvention of the original Mughal-e-Azam outfit worn by Madhubala. There are many, many variations of the old Anarkali salwars, but this one is definitely my favourite. I love the colour, the embroidery, the cut and the Mughal influence. It's this influence that truly makes this outfit unique. Check out the accessories, especially the gorgeous necklace! Gorgeousity from head to ankle. The outfit does "pomegranate blossom" justice. (For those of you who are not familiar with the reference, 'Anarkali' means pomegranate blossom)

Pria Kataria Design

This one is from the Pria Kataria autumn/winter 2008 collection. I have to say, I loved the entire collection. This has to be my all time favourite salwar...EVER! I don't think I really need to describe it, it speaks for itself. The colour, the design, the cut, the embroidery, the dhupatta...I love everything about it. What a great way to showcase the outfit without the dhupatta covering half the front. I want it!!

So, You Wanna be a Grecian Goddess?

We've all seen Shilpa Shetty's white toga/saree/dress combo. It's an interesting and sexy take on the 'Grecian goddess' look. But, if you want something a little more conservative, there are a lot of different ways to go about achieving that look simply and elegantly with just a saree and blouse.

First, here's a refresher. Shilpa Shetty's Grecian goddess dress.

Now, here are a few different ways to achieve the classic Grecian goddess look.

The Designer Goddess

Love, love, love this look. The blouse and the saree are both gathered at the shoulders to create the illusion of a toga. It's simple, it's chic and it's definitely something you can replicate without too much hassle. Trim the blouse with rhinestones, add a simple rhinestone belt and and armlet and voila, you're ready to be a goddess. Also, check out the hair! It very much enhances the whole look. After all, it's the little things that really give a polished finish to any look.

Goddess of Love

When I see this I think 'Aphrodite' for some reason. I think it might just be the sheer simplicity of it. It's a seductive look without being over done or gaudy. After all, isn't that what a goddess of love should look like? Effortlessly seductive. To achieve this look all you need is a white (or off white) opaque saree (maybe a chiffon) and a strapless blouse.

Pleat the pallu in a togaesque way, pin at the shoulder and you're good to go. I think loose curls would enhance the look more. Also, keep the jewelry to a minimum. A broach at the shoulder, a large ring and an armlet should do. To really finish the look, add a pair of gladiator sandals (I know it's Roman, but it will still work).

Sea Foam Goddess

This is not as togaesque as the other two, but I think that might just be because the saree is sheer. Try this way of wrapping with an opaque, plain saree. Aside from the basic rule of not mixing gold jewelry with silver embroidery and vice versa, there are a few other important things to consider when choosing your accessories. This post is meant to be a basic guide about both the latest trends and the different and correct ways to accessorize your Desi clothes. Follow these easy instructions and you'll be looking so fabulous that you'll think you belong in Vogue India.

Match Your Clothes
When I say 'match your clothes' I mean both in terms of colour and style. It's tempting to mix styles if you find a nice accessory that's not the same style as your saree. What I mean by style is that if you're going to wear a lacy, Victorian inspired, light hued lengha, then accessorize in the same style: go for a lacy, light hued Victorian necklace.

The Proper Way to Match Colour(s)

This picture should serve as your main guide when choosing accessories. Match your accessories not to the main colour of the outfit, but to the colour of the border or the embroidery. Picking up a secondary colour will enhance the whole look and make you appear well put together and polished.

The Proper Way to Match Styles

This i what I was talking about before about matching styles. The gorgeous Victorian lace number on the top will probably not look all that great with traditional Indian kundun accessories. Try a very Victorian piece like the one in the middle to complete the whole look. If you want something a bit more grand, accessorize with pearls with a touch of gold like the piece above. Just tailor your accessories according to the style of your outfit.

Trends

Go Victorian

Victorian jewelry (the Indionized version) is one of the hottest accessory trends right now. They come in many different variations from simple pendants to tiered bridal necklaces. This is one look that you don't have to worry too much about matching in terms of style. Just concentrate on matching it to your outfit's colour or colours.

If you don't know what Desi Victorian jewelry looks like, this is it. They come in both antique gold and silver with large, smooth, coloured stones and white crystals. This piece is one of the best examples of classic Victorian inspired jewelry. This set can be worn to just about any occasion from formals to weddings and will definitely make great bridal jewelry.

Victorian inspired bangles are a littler harder to find, but if you can they look delicious. You can add a touch of elegance to any outfit with one of these.

This is another variation of the Victorian necklace. This is a great piece to wear long as well as short. You don't have to worry about it overlapping your saree.

Try Art Deco Pieces

This is another example of how you can make your look totally unique, fun and creative with art deco accessories.

Antiques

Antiques are in. Dig through your mother's or grandmother's old jewelry and see if you can find something you can revamp. If not, don't worry. You can buy imitation antique jewelry at just about every jewelry store, Desi or otherwise. Here are some examples.

Take a cue from Jodhaa and add some regality and panache to your bridal trousseau. Go old school an try accessorizing with a stone worked gold antique set. If you can't afford emeralds and antique gold, jade will work almost as well. Or browse through the imitation antique collection at a Desi costume jewelry store and you'll find something that you like.

Here's a beautifully worked bangle. What's so great about this piece is that it will go well with just about any outfit as long as it has gold embroidery. If you want versatility and style all at once, try something like this.

This is one of my favourite pieces. It's definitely a showstopper and everyone will be talking about how fantastic it looks. Armlets are coming back into fashion with a vengeance and you can be right on top of that trend with this serpentine gold piece. Gold snakes aren't tacky, as long as it's small enough and not over done.

Dare to be Different

Doing the same thing over and over again can get boring. Doing the same thing everyone else does is definitely boring. You want to stand out without sticking out like a sore thumb. You want to be an attention grabber and not an attention whore. You want to be elegant without spending a lot of money. You want to look bold without looking tacky. Well, here's how you can have all of that and more.

Here are two examples to illustrate that a necklace doesn't always have to belong on your neck. Whether you're the bride or a bridesmaid, why not try wearing a beautiful necklace/pendant combo as a stand-in for the traditional tikka. Try wearing it in different ways to see what looks the best before deciding.

Who would've thought pearl head ornaments could work with loose, curly, short hair. Well, this just shows you that it can be done and that if done right can look absolutely stunning. Try embellishing your forehead with some traditional accessories without changing your hair drastically. I'd like to see a bride try this look.

I can't emphasize strongly enough how great pearls are. One way to stand out from the crowd is by wearing pearls. Pearls are classy, elegant, beautiful and regal. The thing is, most women don't wear them and I don't know why. So, if you want to be different while still being fashionable, then try accessorizing with pearls. You can try a cuff bracelet like this or an armlet or even just a strand of fine pearls.

Hunt for unique pieces. You might have to go into a few stores, but it'll be worth it. Keep an eye out for interesting accessories like this one above. It's a cuff bracelet with a dangly kundun ornament and the combination is just stellar.

Bangles (Jhumka and Art Deco)

Don't ever go empty-wristed when wearing Indian clothes. It just looks wrong. Whether you're wearing a bracelet of just a single bangle, wear something on your wrist.

Jhumka Bangles

Jhumka and dangly bangles have been the undisputed kings (or queens) of bangles for the past few years. Ever since they were popularized by the movie 'Devdas' they've been occupying the top spot in terms of the trendiest bangles. These are just two examples of jhumka bangles and there are many, many fabulous varieties.

Art Deco Bangles

Art Deco bangles are becoming enormously popular and trendy now. Although jhumka bangles are still very much in, art deco bangles are competing for the honour of the trendiest bangle style. These pieces are truely showstoppers. I personally prefer stone worked art deco bangles over jhumka bangles.

Jhumki Earrings

Jhumki earrings are a classic Indian staple and they're always in, but they've been popularized even more recently. They're on most Indian runways and now come in all kinds of designs from floral buds to long and multi-tiered. These are a great way to accessorize any Desi outfit.

Clutches

We all know that no look is complete without a clutch. I write 'clutch' instead of 'purse' or 'handbag' on purpose because that's what you need. Accessorize Desi clothes with a great evening clutch and I guarantee that you'll look ten times more posh and fashionable than with a regular purse. Here are some great looks you can try.

If you're only going to have two clutches, then they better be basic gold and silver. Invest in one that has those details that make it a showstopper. You can't go wrong with these two clutches above. They're both very different in style, texture and shape, but they're both bold, fun and elegant.

Beaded clutches are back in fashion. We all remember our mothers having beaded purses in the 80s and early 90s, but they went out of fashion. Now they've been revamped and are back on the runways. This particluar piece is really great because of the variety of colours. You can accessorize a red, blue, green or even a brown outfit with this great peacock feather clutch. It's also a designer quality clutch at an affordable price.

This clutch is a great example of what small details can do in terms of adding oomph and fashion flair. Accessorize a plain black saree with this bold clutch or carry it with a pink or red outfit. It'll definitely turn heads.

Saree Blouse Sleeve Design Ideas Guide

As Promised, here's the saree blouse sleeve (and strap) design guide. Again, this is more of an ideas post than a true guide. I hope some of these designs inspire you in terms of your own saree blouse designs. I'm also going to try my best to provide ideas about how to reproduce these looks with minimal effort on your tailor's part, which translates into more savings for you.

Pleated Sleeve

Designer Sleeves

These two sleeves feature pleated edges that look really novel and interesting on the saree blouses. This look isn't hard to achieve with the right kind of trim. Pleated trim is available at most fabric stores. If you can't find pleated trim at a fabric store, you can easily make your own using other material or a bit of the saree itself.

Fanned Sleeve

Collar Sleeve

You can achieve this look easily, but to make it truly professional try edging the neck with rattail piping (instead of piping it yourself). Also, to achieve a designer look, edge the sleeve with small ruffles or beaded cordedge like below. Both rattail piping and cordedge come in many different colours and textures.

Crossover Sleeve

Edge the sleeve with a bit of the border from your saree. If this is not possible (or you just want to dress up a plain saree blouse) then use any type of contrasting trim. Here are two very different kinds of trim you can use.

Triangle Sleeve

You no longer have to attach each strand of beads by itself. Most fabric or upholstery stores sell beaded ribbons like the ones below that you can use to embellish saree blouse sleeves.

The Best Half-Saree Design I've Ever Seen

This is by far the best half-saree design I've ever seen. Everything from the dupatta to the blouse design to the cut of the skirt to the colours to the silver embellishments, I love. Too bad nice designs like this weren't around when I was a teenager, otherwise I actually would've worn a half-saree. I guess it's still not too late!

Trend Watch - Bejeweled Waist

Innovative jewelry placement seems to be one of the themes of the season. A trend that I very much appreciate and have been advocating for a while. Whether it be belts or belly chains, they help accentuate an hourglass figure, present a trim waist line and enhance the bust and and hips. Here are a few of my favourite examples of bejeweled waists.

Traditional Gold and Turquoise Ornament

I know I've fervently spoken out against hip ornaments, but this is different. this is a showstopper piece and will look good no matter where you wear it. It stands out against this cream coloured saree, but because of it's elaborate, luxurious quality, you can probably get away with wearing this piece with any saree (as long as it has gold embroidery). Make sure you only wear it to an appropriately lavish event or your own wedding! It's not something you should wear to your local SASA formal.

Floral Cut Gold 'Oddiyannam'

This is such a stunning piece of jewelry. What a sumptuous and beautiful way to give the traditional southern 'oddiyanam' an art deco twist! I'm totally in love with this number. If I ever get married, it'll be just so I can wear this during the ceremony.

Golden Empress

Perhaps this is a look only Shilpa Shetty can pull off, but nonetheless, it's worth trying out. The mesh work is quote an innovation as far as Desi ornaments go.

Not only is this such a gorgeous colour and design, I adore the empire waist line created by this pretty little trinket. It's definitely a look that will work for most people. It's simple, it's sexy and it's one of the most 'in' looks! I love, love, love!!

Belted Saree

I'm usually the first person to trash the idea of belting a saree, but after I saw this I'm not all that adverse to the concept. Yes, not all belts work and you shouldn't belt most sarees, but it works well here. The saree is a very simple one, but the colour is very rich and the embroidery gives it a very traditional Indian feel. The jeweled leather belt serves as a nice counter point of modernity and oomph to the traditional ochre saree. It definitely works well here.

I posted the dos and dont's of saree blouse designing yesterday so it will be a basic guide for what not to do when selecting a saree blouse design. However, for those of you who need visual aid for designing saree blouses I thought I would put together this comprehensive saree blouse design guide.

When I say 'comprehensive' I do mean 'comprehensive'! This guide will be split into three different categories. The first is the 'Basic Saree Blouse Designs' category. I think the title is self-explanatory. The second category will be called the 'Contemporary Saree Blouse Designs' and will feature hip and happening designs as well as a how-to guide for achieving each look. The third category is the 'Designer Saree Blouse Ideas' column. These will feature some of the hottest designs and a how-to guide for achieving each look.

Basic Saree Blouse Designs

Here are a few simple, elegant and timeless designs that should get you well on your way to looking like a million bucks.

Here is a simple, contrasting, well cut saree blouse. There's nothing fancy about it. It's your basic, everyday saree blouse, but because it's structured so well, it looks fabulous. The basic sweetheart neck can be widened according to taste and occasion. The see through sleeves and the silver trim add a little bit of flair to this timeless creation.

Achieving this looks is quite simple. All you need is a bit of silver trim (or any other metallic hue that matches your saree), contrasting georgette fabric and cotton lining.

You can find trim at any local fabric store.
Here's what it will look like.

This is an extremely simple and yet extremely sexy back design that any tailor should be able to duplicate. You don't need anything fancy, just the fabric that came with your saree for the purpose of being made into a blouse. The knotting at the top not only adds a little flair of pizazz, but also keeps the blouse from falling off your shoulders.

When in doubt about where to have the saree blouse opening, always choose to have it on the back. It will make the front (the part that most people will see) look smooth and simple. This basic scoop neck looks so good because it sits just right. This is where a good tailor can come in handy. When you have fabric bunching under your arms or the neckline is too loose, it looks extremely unprofessional no matter how good the original design is. The short ruffled sleeves add a touch of playfulness to this look.

This is just another illustration of what a simple, the deep back (quare this time) can do to spice up your saree blouse. Add a knot at the top to keep the shoulders from falling off and you're good to go.

Contemporary Saree Blouse Designing

So you're not a beginner and you know what works. Now you want to know what kind of designs are in now and how you can get that look. This is fairly simple....if you know a few trade secrets.

Knots

Simple front and back knots (ties, bows, etc.) are all the rage. These are extremely easy to achieve and will have you looking like a pro star.

Here's a basic knot for the back. The neck is a simple 'U' and the knot is so easy to reproduce that most tailors will have no problems with it.

I know most of you aren't going to be ripping off your pallu and singing duets in the Alps. However, front knots will looks super hot with net and other sheer sarees. Keep the knot small and simple so it doesn't bulge against the saree.

Here's a knot, well more of a bow, that's a little more elaborate than the ones above. If you want to try this look out, make sure your saree blouse material isn't too stiff. Most georgette materials should be able to handle this kind of knotting. Also, this bow takes more fabric than the average knot so be sure to provide your tailor with plenty of it.

Here's another simple knot. This one should be the easiest to reproduce with minimal effort on your tailor's part. It's also a little bit more conservative, if that's what you want to achieve.

Off-the-Shoulder

Another hot look right now is the off-the-shoulder kind.

This is the boat neck off-the-shoulder look. This is the most common one you'll see.

This is the sweetheart neck off-the-shoulder look. The sleeves are attached separately almost like a band. Although the border of the saree is used here, you can use other kinds of trim if your saree's border isn't suitable for this look. Here are a few examples.

Wide, patterned trim.

This one is my favourite. It's a simple off the shoulder blouse with the added touch of spaghetti straps. You can find all kinds of trims and sequins at your local fabric store to use for the straps.

Halter Neck

Halter necks are highly fashionable now. You'll see them on all the Bollywood leading ladies. Here are a few different kinds of halter necks. Just remember not to wear a necklace with your halter saree blouse.

The classic halter. No special instructions necessary.

The 'V' halter. You can use your saree's border for the 'V' if it's small enough. Otherwise you can use trim.

The crossed halter neck. Again, you can use your saree's border for this, but if you want to add more personality to your look you can opt for wide, sequined trims from your local fabric store.

Strings

Strings have been in for a while now and they still haven't gone away. There are many different looks, but here are a few that are guaranteed to work.

You don't necessarily have to tie the strings. Have the opening of your blouse in the front instead of the back and you won't have to worry about tying the strings.

This is a classic look that a lot of people try, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. It's classic because it works well.

So you've done these looks with the strings and you're getting tired of it. Here are a few ideas to add some pizazz to your worn out string look. Why not use upholstery cord instead of making the string out of your saree blouse fabric? It saves your tailor time and you'll end up looking sexier. Or go string-happy with matching or contrasting rat tails. Your local fabric store should have both.

Use these metallic or colour cords.

Designer Saree Blouse Ideas

You can achieve designer quality looks without the designer. Your local tailor and some imagination is all you need. These looks below will have you looking like you belong in a Bollywood movie premiere!

The Pallu

One way to achieve a designer look is to tuck the pallu of your saree at your waist instead of throwing it over your shoulder. This way, you can design the saree blouse in many different and unique ways. Here are a few ideas.

This is such a great look. You can dress up a simple saree with a super sexy blouse like this. You can buy this kind of blouse fabric from any Indian clothing store. All you need are some floral trim and a string of pearls, which can both be bought at any fabric store.

This double colour crossover blouse will have you looking like a million bucks. You can use whatever fabrics you have, but bright, vibrant colours will work best. Also be sure to match them to your saree. Use cord or trim for the straps and you'll be looking like a Bollywood starlet. You can try this blouse with a sheer or net saree as well.

Hot and Sexy Professional Looks

This hot number looks stunning and is also fairly simple to achieve. All you need is sheer nude fabric, silver trim and a butterfly (or another kind) clasp. All of this you can find at your local fabric store.

Instead of boring spaghetti straps, try jewelled straps instead. You can use a string of pearls, beads or stones. If you can find flat ones, even better.

Here's a risque look that's bound to turn heads. All you need is sequined fabric, see through straps and a little bauble. Use an old, unused neckalce if you have it.

Sleeve Designs

What's one way to dress up a traditional Kanjeevram saree? With a sexy blouse, of course. These sleeves are fabulouse and you can do them in any length and shape.

Try an inverted 'V' sleeve. Add a little sparkle with a few drop beads.

You wanna feel like a Mogul queen? Wear an Anarkali suit. All the rage over the past few months has been over Anarkali suits. These suits bring a touch of royalty to your wardrobe. However, there are some that just leave a bad taste in your mouth. Here are a few hits and misses.

Hit: Contrasting Colours

The colours are stunning, the cut is fabulous and anyone of at least average height can pull it off well.

Miss: Contrasting Prints

Not only is the cut so horrible that it'll make even the thinnest person look fat or pregnant, the contrasting prints are hideous. Definitely a miss.

Hit: Sexy Crossover

This modern, sleek, flirty Anarkali is my favourite. It's got personality, spunk and it'll definitely make heads turn.

Miss: Over-the-top Ruffles

Unless you're a toddler, this much ruffles should be illegal. The suit is fugly to begin with, add a ruffled, scrunched, double coloured shawl and you get this atrocious look.

Hit: Empire Waist

A well placed waistline can make you look taller and slimmer. This particular number is a more traditional take on the Anarkali style, but it's a good example of what an empire waist can do.

Miss: No Waist

This is actually a really beautiful ensemble, however the fact that it's not gathered at the waist is bothering me. It's still salvageable, all it needs is a nice gold belt or a belly chain. However, this isn't a complete miss even on it's own because it has everything else going for it. It has a nice summery, breezy feel about it and the ungathered, flowing quality can be an asset depending on the occasion. Perhaps an outdoor garden or beach wedding? This will do the job nicely.
